As dancers in the North East we always love to see different styles of dance that we can watch or join in with. Whether that be a dance class in our dance studio in New York, North Tyneside or in the wider Newcastle area.
Whether you like to watch professional dance routines, enjoy having a go yourself or just want to go to a club for some Saturday night fun, Newcastle is a city with something to offer. In the city centre and around the immediate area there are a few upcoming events that will appeal to dance fans of all styles and eras.
Watching Dance – Diversity Genesis
Dance specialists Diversity are arriving in Newcastle as part of their national tour on 23rd April when they are playing Newcastle Metro Radio Arena. Following six sell-out tours, the groups have continued to expand their routines and add to the skills that saw them win ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ some seven years ago. Today, they are an inspiration for anyone who loves dance and for kids who want to pursue a career.
Rave Dancing! – Hacienda Classical
If you love classic rave anthems, then the Hacienda Classical will be something completely different for you to enjoy. The event comes to Times Square in Newcastle in August and offers a classical reworking of rave anthems with space to dance. It is overseen by former New Order bassist Peter Hook who create the Hacienda name and concept and is responsible for its new variation.
Get your groove on at the Boiler Shop
The Boiler Shop is a new multi-disciplinary arts and music centre that offers contemporary dance, music and performance from around the UK as well as having in-house artists and performers. Examples include performances by Einsturzende Neubauten, a German industrial band who make their own instruments from scrap metal who are performing on May 5th.
Saturday Night Boogie at Tiger Tiger
Tiger Tiger has a variety of themed rooms offering different styles for different tastes including the White Room and Kanaloa. It is also a great place to get a bite to eat with sharing platters and Asian styles dishes to give you the energy to spend the night on the dance floor.
Watching Dance – Dancefest
Dancefest is taking place at the Northern Stage and is held by Newcastle Dance Society. It features everything from ballet to jazz to street dance and even musical theatre so dance fans will find plenty to entertain them. The show lasts around 2.5 hours and is on 17-18th March.
Spanish Dance – Flamenco Edition 17
Flamenco Edition 17 features Ana Morales and David Coria showcasing classic flamenco dancing in its many different forms, known as palos. The show lasts around 1 hour 15 minutes and starts on 9th May.
Watching Dance – Mark Murphy’s V-TOL
If you want groundbreaking dance, then Mark Murphy’s V-TOL will fit your needs. The genre-defying action-packed theatre comes from the acclaimed writer and director and uses aerial choreography, special effects and original text for a thrilling evening. The show lasts around 80 minutes and started on 26th May.
